HEART DISEASES: DIAGNOSIS - CAUSES

In nearly every form of 'heart disease', the symptom may seem to lie within or be associated with the heart, but it is not the heart which is the primarily deficient organ. The heart's function is disordered by conditions existing elsewhere, and the symptom usually indicates that a willing heart is doing its best to meet exceptional demands, or to maintain its output, despite serious deficiencies in supply or obstructive physical conditions.

Even when the heart itself undergoes degenerative change, it is as a result of prolonged overload and long-term inadequacy of its supplies — of which there have been no shortage of warnings for the patient or his observant physician. It is the failure — or deliberate refusal — of the parties involved to give proper attention to the early indications of abnormality which makes possible, even certain, the eventual breakdown in cardiac function.

This brings us to the essential feature of the naturopathic approach to cardiac troubles — the breadth of the search for primary causes. The naturopath does not confine his enquiries to local signs and symptoms; he ranges over all manner of physical, environmental and emotional considerations, so that he can build up a comprehensive picture of the patient as an individual. The patient's working posture is as important as what he eats and drinks; his success or failure in relationships with his fellow humans is as significant as whether he is physically active or not. The fact that 'heart disease' has been suspected or previously diagnosed is of comparatively little importance. The term lacks precision; it may mean much or it may mean almost nothing — and its effect upon the patient may be quite disproportionate to the seriousness of the condition. Mention of 'heart disease' may be terrifying to a nervous patient with a basically good heart, yet hardly affect a more bovine individual whose heart may truly be in advanced degeneration.
